Dry skin can be uncomfortable, itchy and flaky, the polar opposite of a healthy, hydrated complexion. But why can our skin feel so dry, and what can we do about it?
What CAUSES DRY SKIN?
Some people are simply more prone to it than others. But there can be other factors too, including:
Cold weather. During autumn and winter, humidity levels are generally lower, which can dry your skin.
Hot showers and baths. These can strip natural oils from your skin.
Genetics. Eczema and other skin conditions such as dermatitis can run in the family.
Heating and air conditioning. Indoor heating and cooling systems can remove moisture from the air.
Ageing. As we age, our skin can become drier as we produce less sebum.
Menopause. Changes in our hormones can cause our skin to become drier.
Chemicals and overwashing. Using harsh products on your skin, and washing too often and too vigorously, can strip oils and affect your skin’s pH balance.

HOW DOES DRY SKIN LOOK AND FEEL?
If you have dry skin, you might notice that it feels very tight and uncomfortable, with dry and flaky areas. It might also be red and slightly inflamed in some cases, and it might feel itchy and rough to touch. Sometimes, if it’s particularly dry, it can even crack
WHY DO I NEED MOISTURISER FOR DRY SKIN?
The best weapon you have in your fight against dry skin is a good moisturiser. This will keep your skin hydrated and healthy, smooth and soft.
Apply your skin moisturiser for dry skin morning and evening, or after cleansing. Choose a day cream in the morning and a richer night cream in the evening.
In our user trials, 97% of people said their skin felt less dry over a two-week period when using the Renewal Day Cream, while 96% said their skin felt immediately hydrated after using the Rejuvenating Night Cream.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER WAYS TO TACKLE DRY SKIN?
Moisturiser for dry skin is your first line of defence. But you can also make sure your shower or bath isn’t too hot, drink plenty of water to keep yourself well hydrated and include nuts and oils in your diet.
Remember to apply sunscreen daily, too, to protect your skin from the drying effects of the sun. If you’ve been swimming in a pool or the sea shower afterwards to thoroughly rinse off any chlorine or salt which can dry your skin.
And – as ever – try to avoid smoking, or get help quitting. This can really dry out your skin, causing wrinkles, lines and premature ageing.
The best moisturiser for mature skin that is prone to dryness is probably one which contains some active ingredients.
